UK Post Office digital transformation: Modernizing technology across 11,000+ branches

Transforming technology at the heart of the community: how the UK’s Post Office modernized more than 11,000 branches with DXC

More than 10 million customers a week rely on their local Post Office. For many, it is the last place on the high street offering banking, foreign currency, postal and other essential services. That reliability starts at the counter.

“We are a very important part of the community, offering essential services for local businesses and residents, including banking, foreign currency exchange, passport and postal services — many of which have disappeared from high streets elsewhere. For a huge number of towns and villages, the local Post Office isn’t just convenient; it’s the only connection point between the community and the wider financial and postal system.”

Transformation without closing the doors

Outdated counter technology was putting the reliability of these essential services at risk. Ensuring counter technology is reliable and resilient is essential to helping branches meet customer demand.

The Post Office partnered with DXC on an ambitious modernization programme involving the replacement of technology across approximately 20,000 counters and more than 11,000 branches nationwide. Delivering this transformation while branches remained operational presented a significant logistical challenge.

Working branch by branch, DXC managed engineer visits to minimize disruption to customers and staff, while collaborating with each postmaster to get the installation right first time.

DXC was critical to the success of this programme for us. They were a key partner in delivering the transformation we were doing in branch, and they worked really closely with us throughout the programme in terms of the scheduling of the visits, engineers turning up and ensuring that we did this right first time.”
