Miba migrates SAP to AWS in under 5 months with DXC

For manufacturers operating across global markets, the ability to respond quickly to change is a competitive necessity. Legacy infrastructure often makes that harder than it should be. Miba faced this challenge as it began a decisive shift in its business strategy.

When core systems become a constraint

Founded in 1927, Miba is an Austrian manufacturer employing more than 7,500 people across 30 global production sites. The company has doubled its revenue since 2013 by building up new markets.

The SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) system serves as the application backbone for Miba’s global operations, connecting every production site and supporting mission-critical processes across the business. However, the on-premises platform was designed for stability rather than rapid change.

Scaling required lengthy negotiations and long-term capacity commitments based on forecasts rather than actual demand. Every shift in business direction triggered a fresh round of IT resource planning. As geopolitical considerations grew more complex, Miba also needed greater control over where its data resided and the ability to establish a regional presence quickly where required.

Flexibility became the defining requirement.

“With an on-premises solution, you have to invest upfront based on today’s needs while trying to predict tomorrow’s growth. A cloud solution removes that uncertainty, giving you the flexibility to scale instantly up or down as business demands evolve”

Craig Carter, Chief Information Officer, Miba

A trusted partner to reduce risk and complexity

To gain the agility its growth demanded, Miba made the decision to migrate its SAP ERP system to the cloud. Miba had worked with DXC Technology for years to support its SAP environment. That existing relationship, combined with DXC’s experience as an AWS Partner, made DXC the natural choice to lead the migration.

The migration began with discovery workshops involving teams from Miba, DXC and AWS. Together, they aligned objectives, assessed the existing SAP landscape, and evaluated performance patterns. Requirements tied to Miba’s expanding role in the energy supply chain were built into the planning from the outset.

DXC and AWS architects designed a private cloud environment on AWS that would deliver the flexibility Miba needed while maintaining the stability required for mission-critical operations. Each phase of the migration was carefully planned, risks identified early, and controls put in place to prevent disruption.

Following the migration, DXC assumed responsibility for the environment as a fully managed service, handling day-to-day operations, performance monitoring, security management, and disaster recovery.

“The collaboration between all three teams has been excellent, and DXC’s operations team has managed the solution seamlessly on our behalf. Since migrating to AWS, we haven’t had any escalations — and that says everything. That level of stability and reliability is exactly why DXC continues to be our trusted partner.”

— Craig Carter, Chief Information Office, Miba

Stability today, flexibility for future innovation

Thorough preparation and close collaboration paid off. The teams completed the migration of the entire SAP landscape in under 5 months, finishing one month ahead of schedule with virtually zero downtime. Since go-live, Miba has maintained close to 100 percent uptime across its SAP environment.

With a stable foundation in place, Miba’s internal IT teams are no longer absorbed by infrastructure issues and daily operational management. They can focus on initiatives that directly support the business.

The shift to AWS has also changed how Miba scales. Computing resources can be adjusted quickly in line with real demand, without lengthy notifications or long-term capacity commitments. Perhaps most significantly, the cloud-based architecture positions Miba for its next wave of innovation. Using it, the company can incorporate SAP ERP data into other enterprise applications and support the advanced analytics capabilities that AI requires.
