The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International is recognized as "the industry's most-cited source for driving automation." SAE J3016™ Recommended Practice: Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to Driving Automation Systems for On-Road Motor Vehicles (also referred to as the SAE Levels of Driving Automation™) defines six levels of driving automation:
SAE International defines Level 4 as follows: "The user does not need to supervise a Level 4 ADS feature or be receptive to a request to intervene while the ADS is engaged. A Level 4 ADS is capable of automatically performing DDT fallback, as well as achieving a minimal risk condition if a user does not resume performance of the DDT. This automated DDT fallback and minimal risk condition achievement capability is the primary difference between Level 4 and Level 3 ADS features. This means that an in-vehicle user of an engaged Level 4 ADS feature is a passenger who need not respond to DDT performance-relevant system failures." LOXO was the first service provider in Europe to secure government approval for fully driverless Level 4 autonomous commercial vehicles in Germany and Switzerland. It began operating on Swiss public roads in 2023. In 2024, it launched Europe’s first city-wide logistics application with Swiss delivery firm, Planzer, and in 2025 it secured Germany’s first autonomous home delivery with retailer Rewe. Today, LOXO's commercial vehicles are responsible for delivering thousands of packages to individuals and businesses in Germany and Switzerland. They are Europe’s "most experienced digital driver in urban delivery."
