Freeing up MEO's legal resources with GenAI
The telecommunications industry is one of the most heavily regulated sectors across the globe. Legal analysts at telecoms routinely handle and respond to a barrage of new regulatory requests, which often require cross-referencing of corporate legal records to answer questions.
In addition, a significant amount of time is spent manually processing large volumes of legal documents to get the job done.
AI assistants lift the weight of regulation
But generative AI can be a game changer in accelerating transformation for industries, especially in terms of recognizing patterns, analyzing huge datasets at impressive speeds and providing immediate insights.
A good example is MEO Portugal, one of the country’s largest telco services providers, which recognized the potential of generative AI to reduce the number of hours and amount of effort it takes to manage compliance. Saving time in analyzing and responding to regulatory requests would enable its legal teams to focus their attention on more complex legal work.
In collaboration with MEO, DXC developed an AI assistant with ChatGPT capabilities. The generative AI solution, first created as a proof-of-concept, simplifies the process of regulatory compliance by automatically sourcing regulatory response information from legal documents into a standardized format. Using a controlled, private document repository, the tool ensures maximum data security and confidentiality.
Uncovering AI’s potential
Using conversational prompts, legal analysts can quickly get the data they need to respond to regulatory requests with greater speed and efficiency. The AI assistant generates actionable insights, breaking down complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable next steps.
In addition, it provides regulatory response summaries for MEO’s executive board, enabling them to make informed decisions more quickly and confidently.
“The conversational assistant with ChatGPT capabilities surprised us with the assertiveness of its responses,” said Francisco Xavier dos Santos, head of Regulation, Competition and Legal at MEO Portugal. “It's a tool that allows us to free up resources and speed up the work carried out by our team of legal analysts.”
Charting the path forward with AI
MEO is a great example of how smaller-scale initiatives allow organizations to test AI's potential without making large resource investments or significantly disrupting ongoing operations.
Early wins with AI can generate excitement, build momentum and pave the way for broader adoption—and even greater impact.
To that end, MEO is looking into how to build on its work with DXC to create a broader company-wide AI solution that can support new use cases. As Júlio Ribeiro, head of IT Architecture & Reference Data at MEO Portugal explains, “the construction of the proof of concept quickly became a proof of value.”
